Marsha Wenig

Marsha Wenig is a leading teacher of yoga and imaginative play for children. After more than 20 years of research and practice, her YogaKids program is recognized as the most successful and widely known yoga education program for children in the world today.

In addition to developing several Gaiam DVDs for children, she has written Yoga Kids: Educating the Whole Child through Yoga. Her work is based on the Multiple Intelligences theory developed by Harvard educator Howard Gardner. This theory purports that children learn through their bodies. Thus, in all of Marsha's work, she uses yoga, fitness games and imaginative play to help children learn more about themselves and the world around them. For example, as she teaches children to move, she teaches the alphabet, colours, numbers, and other information.

“Children are kinesthetic learners - they learn through movement,” Marsha explains. “It's how they interact with the world. When that element is incorporated, the difference is magnificent. They get it.”

A former teacher in Los Angeles Public Schools and the LaPorte Public Schools (in Indiana), Marsha first became interested in yoga more than 20 years ago, when she studied under Don Wenig, whom she later married. She and Don were asked to demonstrate yoga at their daughter's Montessori school and subsequent requests for classes resulted. Over time, Marsha learned more about teaching yoga to children and decided to develop a curriculum based on the best education techniques she could find, namely the Multiple Intelligences theory and cross-brain development theory.

Along with her continued work with Gaiam, Marsha is developing a program for teachers of young children and teens that merges yoga with astronomy, geography, math and languages.
